WASHINGTON (TND) — U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona refused to define “woman” during a tense exchange with Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., that took place while Cardona was testifying in front of the House Appropriations Committee Tuesday.
Cardona’s testimony comes amid an ongoing debate over the Department of Education’s proposed Title IX rules that expand the purview of sexual discrimination to include gender identity when it comes to transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.
Under the Education Department’s proposal, which still has to be finalized, no school or college receiving federal funds can issue a blanket ban prohibiting transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. However, certain restrictions can be made for the sake of competitive fairness.
“This proposed rule would withhold federal assistance from schools across the nation seeking to maintain the integrity and safety of women’s sports,” Clyde, a staunch GOP opponent to the Biden administration’s new Title IX rule, said to Cardona during the Tuesday Appropriations hearing.
